My Story

I create paintings that celebrate the optimism, freedom, craftsmanship, and ingenuity that define the American experience. My goal is to inspire viewers with art to see both the value of our heritage and the possibilities of renewal for our future.

I am originally from Springfield, Massachusetts. At a young age my mother enrolled me in art classes at the Springfield Museum. She would often take me to drawing or music classes or museum visits.
I completed a bachelor’s degree in "Art in Urban Life" from Springfield College. During school we had regular trips to New York City and visited many galleries and museums and I was influenced by Robert Cottingham and Richard Estes and the photo realism of the time. After graduation, I apprenticed under Armando Balboni one of my professors and an internationally known painter and sculptor. This experience cemented my understanding of artistic creation and the techniques of a professional artist. This is one of my early paintings of my mother, sister and me.

I joined the Navy to see the world which turned into a 30-year sabbatical from painting. Starting in boot camp, then supporting the fleet as an enlisted sailor, working with the intelligence agencies, being commissioned as an officer and retiring as a Navy Captain. This experience culminated with me living and working in over 50 countries, and being a veteran of foreign wars in Libya, Iraq, and Afghanistan. These travels made me appreciate the wonderful art of the world, but more importantly how different the American style was. After my return home from the military in 2016, I began to paint again. At first, as PTSD therapy recommended by my counselor and then with an increasing passion to share my artistic vision of the American story to inspire others.

My motivation comes from the America of my childhood, and I want my art to create an emotional connection through bright colors, strong perspective, and reflections. I love how light and shadow work with color and function. I want others to find joy and optimism in my paintings.
